Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has declared that Malaysians must embrace rather than resist a new government programme offering free artificial intelligence subscriptions to young adults, framing technological adoption as essential to building what the administration calls an AI Nation. Speaking at the launch of AI Malaysia in Cyberjaya on Tuesday, Anwar argued that resistance to such initiatives ultimately harms the people they aim to serve, and that the benefits of AI access should be distributed equitably across society regardless of geography or economic status.

The initiative, which commences on August 31, targets Malaysians between 18 and 30 years old and anticipates reaching 100,000 participants. Young adults who successfully complete a series of educational modules on the Rakyat Digital platform—a government digital literacy system launching on Merdeka Day—will receive complimentary three-month access to prominent artificial intelligence applications. The curriculum covers critical competency areas including AI Security, Cyber SAFE, Agentic AI, Generative AI, and Cloud Untuk Rakyat, reflecting the government's intention to build foundational knowledge before granting tool access.

AI Malaysia itself represents a broader state-coordinated effort to accelerate the nation's embrace of artificial intelligence technology, standardise policies across different sectors, and generate innovation aligned with Malaysia's published AI Nation 2030 vision. The initiative brings together Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, and other senior officials, signalling high-level commitment to the programme's execution and success across government agencies.
