Vietnam represents an instructive case study. The country made significant progress toward developing nuclear capacity before shelving its programme in 2016 amid safety concerns and political shifts, despite having invested years and substantial resources in building the necessary infrastructure and expertise. Thailand and other nations have similarly halted or indefinitely postponed nuclear projects, highlighting the political fragility that characterises atomic energy initiatives in the region. These reversals underscore that technical and economic logic alone may prove insufficient to overcome public and political resistance in the Southeast Asian context.
Anwar's intervention also reflects broader regional geopolitical considerations. China has emerged as the world's most aggressive developer of new nuclear capacity, and Chinese technology and financing have become central to atomic energy projects across Asia. By emphasising that nuclear power deserves consideration in regional energy planning, Anwar may be signalling Malaysia's pragmatism about engaging with diverse energy technologies and international partners. This diplomatic stance positions the country as willing to learn from global best practices without reflexively embracing or rejecting particular energy sources based on ideology.

Rather than viewing nuclear and renewables as competing alternatives, policymakers might more productively explore how diverse low-carbon technologies could complement each other within integrated energy systems. Such pragmatism would require moving beyond ideological positions toward evidence-based analysis of what technologies serve each country's particular circumstances, geography, and development needs.
